Experimental TYPOGRAPHY
An exploration of form and structure typography whether it is English or Japanese. As I go, I could explore other languages. Experimenting between shape, texture, color, and overlay changes the way we look at typography. This project will eventually go from 2D to 3D letterforms and potentially designing based on the environment the letters live in. I want to hopefully push the boundaries on environmental + wayfinding design. I was inspired to do work on Typography when I moved to Japan. It made me realize how important language is and how it is depicted. Words and vocabulary has always been hard for me unless I created visuals in my mind for me to remember them. Now i am creating them physically to understand and also learned more.
Dimensional Hierarchy
(College Thesis)
Dimensional Hierarchy is an exploration of environmental graphics, aiming to understand how form and space can help create hierarchy and affect meaning. A series of typographic experiments were structured around the classifications of Aristotle’s Organon: posture, place, quantity, quality, action, relation, affection, and time. Weekly experiments explored a single classification through different materials, while increasing in complexity from a single letter, to a word, to a phrase. From these preliminary experiments, four large scale typographic installations were created for this exhibition, each displaying a different way that type, message, and hierarchy can change when it interacts with space. A process book is the final container for this project, containing documentation of each experiement as well as the final installations.
